Committees are encouraged to meet to discuss the primary duties of the committee.

Each committee reports to the board chairman as needed

Volunteer Committees - 2026

Advent Wreath / Program

This committee's duties include creation of the advent wreath (usually done by June Wallace), writing a narrative for each Sunday of Advent, lining up families to light the Advent candle each Sunday, and find a narrator to read the scripts. This is a very meaningful part of the worship service during the Christmas season

Lynn Davis

Baptisms

Fill the baptistry, assist the minister and the person(s) being baptized, drain and clean the baptistry.

Reeves Smith

John Picartello

Bereavement Meal Ministry

The bereavement co-chairs are responsible for contacting the committee members to help prepare side dishes and desserts, set up tables and chairs, and serve the family during the meal.  They will also clean afterwards.

    Debbie Smith

    Brenda Godley

Birth Recognition

Put a flower (usually a rose on the pulpit) in honor of the child. Get information about the child (name, date of birth, parents, grandparents, etc.). Put information on the pulpit to be included in announcements. Give the birth information to the secretary to include in the bulletin.

Connie Winstead

Cantata Social

There is a social following the Sunday evening performance of the cantata. If you wish to help or to furnish food for the social, notify the people who are on the committee. Help is also needed for set up and clean up for this event.

Christmas Eve Service

Candle stands have to be collected from Claudia's barn and set up on the dais in the sanctuary behind the rails and around the poinsettia tree. Candles and globes must be added and cleaned if needed (check with June Wallace). Greenery, usually smilax, is attached to the stands. Communion should be prepared and ready to serve, this includes wine and homemade bread baked by one of the ladies in the church. Hand-held candles need to be readied and placed in baskets in the vestibules for the deacons and elders to distribute. Before church service on the Sunday following Christmas, the Christmas Eve stands need to be removed and returned. This committee definitely needs men for all the heavy lifting.

Christmas Tree

(Put up, decorate & take down)

This committee has been in place for a while, but they would probably welcome additional help. The Christmas ornaments that hang on our tree were created by the ladies of the church several years ago. Jean Bowen was the planner and leader of this creative group. This committee takes the tree out of storage, assembles it, attaches the lights and hangs the Christmas ornaments. The ornaments are stored in a map cabinet in the storage closet in the post office room. When Christmas is over, this committee "undecorates" the tree, returns the ornaments and tree to their storage spaces and cleans up the area. A tall ladder is needed for this task, two are probably helpful. Men are needed for this committee.

Christmas Parade Float

A float representing our church should be planned and decorated. The committee should gather all needed supplies for the float, including a trailer (or transportation) and a vehicle to pull it and a driver. If people are needed to ride on the float, ask for volunteers. Purchase of ask people to donate candy to throw. When the parade is over, undecorate the float and return everything. The church will reimburse the committee for purchased supplies.

Christmas Poinsettias

Every Christmas there is a beautiful poinsettia tree set up under the cross in the sanctuary. Church members donate money to pay for the poinsettias (which they are asked to remove and take home after Christmas). These poinsettias are place in honor or memory of loved ones. The committee is responsible for taking orders for these plans, keeping a record of who has ordered and the dedication of each pot. The notations about the dedications are given to the secretary to place in the bulletin. The committee orders the plants, arranges for the pickup or delivery and arranges the plants on a metal tree form that is stored in the closet behind the baptistry. They are also responsible for watering the plants during the season. When Christmas is over, the committee takes the plants down and request church members to take the plants home. The frame is disassembled and put away, and its space is cleaned up.

Hanging of Greens

(Includes taking down and storage)

Our sanctuary is a beautiful place, spiritually and physically, and at Christmastime it is awesome, thanks to this committee. This committee is asking for help. The jobs of this committee include taking the wreath out of storage (in the Moe Shack), fluffing or adding new bows, and hanging the wreaths in the sanctuary and side rooms, as well as on the exterior doors. They take down the wraths and store them away for another year. Men are very helpful for this committee for moving ladders and heavy lifting.

Homecoming

On the first Sunday in October, following several nights of revival, the church celebrates Homecoming. The church furnishes chicken and ham; members of the church provide covered dishes and desserts. People on this committee set up tables for the food (napkins and eating utensils) as well as spread the dishes of food on these tables with serving utensils. They make the tea, fill cups with ice, and set up a beverage table outside the back of the fellowship hall. Men of the adult Sunday School Class set up tables outside where people can eat. Following the meal, everyone is asked to remove his/her dishes and helps clean up. Tables and chairs have to be put back in place. A large tent needs to be ordered; it is set up at the back of the church lot to provide shelter from the sun while the people eat. Becky Tuten usually takes care of the tent, Claude Dupree order the chicken, and Mary Lynn Edwards and usually another lady bake the hams. There are lots of jobs on this committee for lots of people

Mother/Father’s Day

Our church has celebrated these special days in different way — usually with a rose; sometimes honoring the oldest parent, youngest parent, parent with the most children, parent with the most grandchildren, etc. Sometimes the times are drawn from a basket and the selected names receive a rose. The Youth has also celebrated these days with bookmarks. This committee can decide which of these ways they choose to honor our mothers and fathers or by starting a new tradition.

Paraments

Paraments are the colored cloths that hang on the communion table under the glass and on the pulpit under the bible. In case you did not know, the parament colors represent periods of time in the Christian calendar, or the liturgical calendar, marking the changing of the church year, i.e. spiritual seasons, such as Lent, Advent, Pentecost, Good Friday, Easter, Christmas and "Ordinary time." The Paraments are changed to depict these various periods.

Nursery Schedule

People must be available every Sunday for Nursery duty. There is a list of people who are willing to do this task. A schedule is made and posted in the bulletin for each Sunday. If you are not available for your scheduled Sunday, please line up someone to take your place. This is an important service opportunity, and very few members of the congregation have added their names to this list. If more people take a turn in the Nursery, fewer people will have to miss the church service so often.

Rachel Jordan

Youth Moment Schedule

Find people who would like to participate in children's moment by presenting a brief (3-5 minutes) devotion geared to children. Congregation members should let the person in charge of this committee that they are interested in participating. Presenters will be given a schedule; if you cannot be available on the date you are scheduled, be responsible for finding a replacement or for letting the person in charge know that you can't be present.

Publicity

The task of this committee is the sharing of information about our church and its special occasions. This is done on social media, newspapers, etc. They also need to share such information with the technology committee and the Facebook people. The committee is responsible to hang information banners at the corner of Harding and Carteret streets. They are responsible for having dates changed on existing banners or have new banners created for new events. This committee needs to work closely with the church secretary to coordinate dissemination of information.

Opening/Closing Church Buildings

Members of the board are currently covering these jobs. For security purposes, the church must remain locked between services and other meetings. The committee unlocks the doors of the church and fellowship hall and turns on the lights. After services or other church events, turn off all lights except one row of overhead lights in the sanctuary, lock all exterior doors, adjust thermostats.

 Communion

Prior to church, fill communion sets with bread and juice and place them on the communion table. Following service, empty left-over cups, wipe out trays and refill trays with cups for the next week. Take care of ordering the bread and purchasing the juice.

 Family Night

Family Night has existed in our church for many years. Once a month on the 4th Wednesday evening, the church body meets to share a meal, a devotion and fellowship. The church family is divided in to cook teams who prepare the meals for each month. These committees serve in a rotating order. All church attenders are welcome to join a cook team and are encouraged to speak to the chairman of this committee to be placed on a team. Each committee plans its menu, prepares the meal, serves it, and presents a short devotion. Currently the cook teams are in need of reorganization because the numbers are inconsistent. If you have a solution, this is a volunteer space meant for you.

See the Family Night Teams below.

Fellowship Hall Reservations

(Includes use of tables & chairs)

Church members and others must sign up for the use of the Fellowship Hall in order to avoid more than one group showing up for the space at the same time. The secretary has a sign-up schedule, so everyone can check the availability before planning a function. The secretary also has the necessary paperwork if the function is not a church-related activity.

Connie Lyon, Church Office

Fellowship Hall Supplies

Nancy and Billy Hill have been taking care of the purchase of supplies for a while. These supplies consist of the consumables used by the church — paper products, cleaning products, and other needed items. There is a tablet on the bulletin board in the kitchen where members can list items that re needed, particularly if someone uses the last of something.

Flower Schedule

Every family is invited to provide flowers for one Sunday during the year. Diane Adams has been the keeper of the schedule, and she records volunteer donors for the entire year. Connie Lyon posts the flower schedule in the newsletter and in the church bulletin. If you do not want to prepare your own flowers, you may contact Claudia, and she will assist. When you sign up for flowers, please give Diane the information regarding the person(s) in whose honor you are placing flowers. After the morning worship service, please remove your flowers from the church and return the vase to the kitchen when you are finished with it.

Diane Adams

Graduation/Graduation Meal

Collect names and information of students withing the church family who are graduating from college, high school or eighth grade (school attended; degree, if college; plans after high school; which high school the student will attend if graduating from 8th grade. Collect names and information for Juniors (11th graders) or middle school (7th graders) who have achieved the honor of being a marshal for graduation.

Reserve seats for the graduates. Line the graduated up outside and coordinate with minister and piano player when to have them march in. Order bibles for graduates (Nancy Hill usually does this.) Create aa brief introduction for each graduate from the information gathered to be read when bibles are presented. Recognize Marshals (no bibles). Begin graduate introductions with 8th graders, then high, finally college. Coordinate with graduates as to whether they will wear caps and gowns or other attire. Have someone to line them up outside (in order of recognition) and signal them when to enter, where to sit and what to expect when each name is called.

In the past a meal was served, but, because of sparse attendance, this practice has not been done lately. The committee can decide about a meal (just for graduates and their families or a covered dish lunch for everyone or no meal at all.)
